As some of you know, I have an amateur radio licence, so I decided to buy a cheap handheld radio or walkie talkie to carry around, that I won’t mind if it gets damaged or lost. Previously you would have had to buy from one of the big three Japanese manufacturers (Yaesu, Icom or Kenwood). The handheld would have cost from about £200 or more depending on the specification. Tonight, Amazon delivered me a cheap Chinese handheld for about £25, that has all the functions of the dearer Japanese version. The build quality and operation of the Chinese handheld may not be up to the same standard of the Japanese handheld, but for £25 is a bargain.
My new Baofeng UV6R
Amazingly cheap radio for what it does, Over the years I’ve collected as many of it’s variations as i can
i’ve got the UV-5R, UV-5RA, B, C, D and E, and the tripower UV-5RTP.
By far the best variation which is my daily carry is the Kenwood badged TK UV-F8,
double the number of memories and user adjustable mic gain (which it needs)
